The Maharashtra government has decided to rename students hostels in state-run universities as ‘Matoshree’. This would include all existing and upcoming hostels, falling under the higher and technical education department. The ministry is headed by Uday Samant, Shiv Sena leader. ‘Matoshree’ happens to be the name of Chief Minister and Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray’s residence in suburban Bandra in Mumbai.

According to a report in The Times of India, a government resolution on the matter was issued on Tuesday. It said all existing college hostels without any specific names, will be renamed as ‘Matoshree government hostels’.

These hostels offer students shelter facilities as their own mothers and also inculcate feelings of warmth and affection in their minds, the GR further said. AT present, these facilities are identified as boys or girls hostels.

Earlier, Samant had said he would explore the possibility of renaming the existing hostels as ‘Matoshree, as these facilities offer students shelter like their own mothers. “All the upcoming hostels on campuses of universities will be named ‘Matoshree’. I will also explore the possibility of giving the same name to the existing facilities,” he had said.
