PM Modi Hits Out at Mamata Banerjee at Brigade Rally, Says CM has Betrayed Bengal

Drawing battle lines in West Bengal ahead of polls, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday attacked the ruling Trinamool Congress party and said Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has betrayed Bengal. He promised a “Sonar Bangla” (Golden Bengal) if the BJP is voted to power.

“The dream of ‘Sonar Bangla’ will be fulfilled. Today, I have come here today to assure you of Bengal’s development, to increase investment here, to protect Bengal’s culture and to bring change,” the Prime Minister said at the city’s Brigade Parade Ground.

Hitting out at TMC, Left and Congress, PM Modi said these parties have an anti-Bengal attitude. “In this Assembly elections, there are TMC, Left and Congress, and their anti-Bengal attitude on one side and on the other side, there are people of Bengal,” he said.

“I have come here to make you believe in ‘Asol Poribortan’, believe in Bengal’s development, in change of Bengal’s situation and in the reconstruction of Bengal,” Modi said.

He said the next 25 years are very important for development in the state. In 2047, he said, when India will celebrate 100 years of independence, West Bengal will lead the country once again.

He then used Trinamool’s favourite “Maa, Manush, Maati” motto to point out the increasing instances of violence in the state. “You are well aware of the condition of ‘Maa, Manush, Maati’. Mothers are being attacked on streets and in their houses. Recently, the cruelty unleashed on an 80-year-old mother has shown their cruel face to the entire country,” he said.

He further said that Bengal will lead India, adding that his government will make Kolkata, which is known as the city of joy, the “city of future”.

Meanwhile, actor Mithun Chakraborty joined the Bharatiya Janata Party at the Brigade Parage Ground. He was inducted into the saffron in the presence of state party chief Dilip Ghosh.

While addressing the Brigade Ground rally, Mithun asked people to have faith in him as he will always be there with the people of Bengal. “I am Mithun Chakraborty, I do what I say. Have faith in Dada, I am going to be always there with you,” he said.

BJP general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya, party vice president Mukul Roy, and turn-coat Suvendu Adhikari were also present at the venue. The Prime Minister also promised food processing industry in Bengal and pitched for engineering, medical and other important higher studies in the Bangla.

“What Bengal has lost in 75 years people know that. Today with this Sankalp we have come here. Take my words in writing. ‘Jo bhi Bengal se cheena gaya hai woh wapas aayega’,” he added.

The BJP had launched a grand campaign for the rally across the state with party activists carrying out flash mobs over the past few weeks at several locations across the state. Elections to West Bengal’s 294-seat Assembly are scheduled to be held in eight phases from March 27 to April 29 and the results will be declared on May 2.
