COVID-19 Cases in India: The weekly positivity rate has also declined and now stands at 10.93 per cent.

India’s COVID-19 infection tally climbed to 2,73,69,093 as 2,11,298 more people tested positive for the disease in a day, while the country’s recovery was recorded at 90 per cent, according to the Union Health Ministry on Thursday.

The death count due to the disease climbed to 3,15,235 with 3,847 fresh fatalities being reported in a span of 24 hours, the data updated at 8 am showed.

Also, 21,57,857 COVID-19 tests were conducted on Wednesday, taking the total number of such exams done so far in the country to 33,69,69,353.

The daily positivity was recorded at 9.79 per cent. It has been less than 10 per cent for three consecutive days now, the ministry said.

The weekly positivity rate has also declined and now stands at 10.93 per cent.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath asserted that all eligible persons in the state will be vaccinated against Covid and said a vaccine for those in the 12-18 age group is coming soon.

Currently, those above 18 years of age are being inoculated against the infection.

“Vaccine for people in the age group of 12-18 years is coming soon. We will vaccinate everyone,” Yogi Adityanath said in Deoria.

India has crossed 20 crore cumulative COVID-19 vaccination coverage, making it only the second country to achieve the feat after the US, news agency PTI quoted the Union health ministry as saying on Wednesday. India achieved this in 130 days as against the US’ feat in 124 days, said the ministry.

According to the ministry’s morning data, new cases of coronavirus infection in India were recorded over 2.08 lakh, taking the total tally of COVID-19 cases to 2,71,57,795.

The COVID-19 active caseload is 24,95,591 which now comprises 9.19 per cent of the total infections.

The recovery rate is 89.66 per cent, the data stated.

A total of 2,40,842 new infections were registered in a day, while the death count increased to 3,11,388 with 4,157 daily new fatalities, the data updated at 8 am showed.

The B.1.617 COVID-19 variant, first detected in India, has now been found in 53 countries, according to the WHO, which noted that India recorded a 23 per cent decrease in the number of new cases in the last seven days but they were still the highest in the world. The World Health Organisation’s COVID-19 Weekly Epidemiological Update, published May 25, said that over the past week, the number of new cases and deaths continued to decrease globally, with over 4.1 million new cases and 84,000 new deaths reported, a 14 per cent and 2 per cent decrease respectively compared to the previous week. According to the update, the B.1.617 variant, first detected in India, is now prevalent in 53 countries globally.
No Vaccine, No Salary: Chhattisgarh Tribal Department Officer Warns Staff

A tribal welfare department officer in a Chhattisgarh district has issued an order asking its staff members to get vaccinated against COVID-19, failing which their salaries for the next month will be withheld. A copy of the order, issued by the assistant commissioner K S Masram in Gaurela-Pendra-Marwahi district on May 21, went viral on social media where some people expressed displeasure over the ”diktat”. The order asked officers and employees working in the tribal welfare department-run offices, ashrams (residential schools) and hostels in the district to get inoculated and submit their vaccination cards at its office. If they do not take the vaccine, their salaries for the next month will be withheld, said the order which came into force with effect from the date of being issued.

Maharashtra: Thane’s COVID-19 Count Rises By 900
Thane has reported 900 new cases of coronavirus, raising the infection count in the Maharashtra district to 5,12,567, an official said on Thursday. These new cases were recorded on Wednesday, he said. The virus also claimed the lives of 46 more people, pushing the death toll in Thane to 9,009, he said, adding that the COVID-19 mortality rate here stood at 1.76 per cent. Details of recovered and under-treatment patients were not provided by the district administration. In neighbouring Palghar district, the COVID-19 case count has gone up to 1,08,123, while the death toll has reached 2,010, another official said.
