Sensex, Nifty Close At Record Highs For Fourth Session In A Row

The S&P BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty 50 indexes extended their record-breaking streak to fourth session in a row led by gains in Reliance Industries, Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, Kotak Mahindra Bank, UltraTech Cement and HDFC Bank. The Sensex rose as much as 315 points to hit an all-time high of 45,742.23 and Nifty 50 index climbed as much as 80 points to record high of 13,435.45. Reliance Industries was the top mover in the Nifty and Sensex. The stock rose over 2 per cent after its Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani hinted at rolling out 5G network by the second half of 2021.

The Sensex closed 182 points higher at record high of 45,608.51 and Nifty 50 index climbed 37 points to close at an all-time high of 13,392.95.

The markets have been hitting record highs on news of progress in Covid-19 vaccine development amid sustained buying of Indian shares by Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs). FIIs on Monday bought shares worth Rs 3,793 crore.

Five of 11 sector gauges compiled by the National Stock Exchange ended higher, led by Nifty PSU Bank index’s over 7 per cent gain. IT, banking and real estate shares also witnessed buying interest.

On the other hand, metal, pharma and media shares faced selling pressure.

Mid- and small-cap stocks ended on a flat not as Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 indexes ended on a flat note.

UltraTech Cement was top Nifty gainer; the stock rose 3 per cent to Rs 5,211. Reliance Industries, Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, Wipro, State Bank of India, HDFC Bank, HCL Technologies, Bajaj Auto, Kotak Mahindra Bank and HDFC Life also rose 0.4-2.2 per cent each.

On the flip side, Hindalco, Sun Pharma, Coal India, IndusInd Bank, Adani Ports, NTPC, Grasim Industries, Tech Mahindra and Bharat Petroleum were among the losers.

The overall market breadth was neutral as 1,497 shares ended higher while 1,461 closed lower on the BSE.
