Here are Other Chief Ministers of the State

Yogi Adityanath has become the first chief minister of Uttar Pradesh from the Bharatiya Janata Party to complete four consecutive years of his tenure. On Thursday, he completed 1,460 days as CM of the state. As he enters the fifth year of his term, Yogi Adityanath is also the head of a BJP government in UP with the biggest majority.

From Govind Ballabh Pant to Yogi Adityanath, 21 chief ministers have taken the reins of the state of Uttar Pradesh so far. The record of being the CM for the longest time continuously is in the name of Dr Sampurnanand of the Congress. He was the chief minister from December 28, 1954, to December 6, 1960 (5 years and 344 days).

Prior to Yogi, Rajnath Singh from the BJP had been CM of the state from 2000 till 2002 (1 year and 131 days). Immediately before that BJP leader Ram Prakash Gupta got a chance from 1999 to 2000 (351 days), while prior to that Kalyan Singh from the saffron party had the command of the state from 1997 till 1999 (2 years and 52 days).

The three chief ministers of the BJP before Yogi were the CMs from September 21, 1997, through to March 8, 2002. In this way, three BJP leaders got a chance to become the chief minister in a five-year period. Kalyan Singh became the chief minister for the first time in 1991, heading a majority government of the BJP.

Narayan Dutt Tiwari and Chandrabhanu Gupta, both from the Congress, and Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati got the chance to become the CM of the state four times, while Mulayam Singh Yadav of the Samajwadi Party became the chief minister three times.

Chaudhary Charan Singh of the Bharatiya Kranti Dal, Congress’s Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna, and BJP’s Kalyan Singh got the opportunity to be chief minister of UP twice. Sucheta Kripalani (Congress), TN Singh from Congress (O), Kamalapati Tripathi (Congress), Ramnaresh Yadav from Janata Party, Babu Banarasi Das also from Janata Party, Vishwanath Pratap Singh from Congress, Sripati Mishra (Congress), Vir Bahadur Singh (Congress), BJP’s Rajnath Singh, Ram Prakash Gupta (BJP) and Samajwadi Party’s Akhilesh Yadav have been chief ministers of the state once each.

Govind Ballabh Pant became the first chief minister of Uttar Pradesh on January 26, 1950. He was the CM for two terms till December 27, 1954. Going further back in history, the first ‘premier’ of the state, then the United Provinces under British Rule, was Sir Nawab Muhammad Ahmed Saeed Khan (Nawab Chhatari). His tenure lasted only from April 3, 1937, to July 16, 1937 (104 days).
