A huge surge of 3.68 lakh fresh Covid cases in the last 24 hours took India’s total caseload to 1.99 crore.
The country saw 3,417 deaths linked to Covid during this period, which takes the total number of deaths to 2.18 lakh.
On Sunday, the country reported the highest number of deaths since the start of the pandemic with 3,689 people dying. 3,92,488 infections were recorded during the previous 24 hours, six per cent higher than the latest daily spike.
Meanhwile, for the second straight day, Delhi reported over 400 Covid deaths on Sunday while the positivity rate – the rate at which people getting tested for Covid receive positive results – dropped below 30 per cent, according to the state health bulletin. The city also added 20,394 fresh cases.
It reported 407 deaths on Sunday, a tad behind the 412 deaths on Saturday, the highest so far. The positivity rate stood at 28.33 per cent.
Delhi on Friday recorded 375 deaths, 395 on Thursday, 368 on Wednesday, 381 on Tuesday, 380 on Monday, 350 on Sunday, and 357 on Saturday last week, according to government data.
The city has so far recorded 11,94,946 cases, of which over 10.85 lakh have recovered. The death count due to the viral disease stands at 16,966, the bulletin said.

Telangana reported 5,695 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, the State Health Department said on Monday.
A total of 6,206 patients recovered while 49 lost their lives in the same time period.
The tally of coronavirus cases in the state now stands at 4,56,485. There are currently 80,135 active cases in Telangana.
The state has reported 3,73,933 recoveries while 2417 deaths were recorded as per the official report.
The recovery rate of the state is 81.91 per cent and the case fatality rate stands at 0.52 per cent.
Spokesperson of Bharatiya Janata Party in Uttar Pradesh Manoj Mishra died due to COVID-19 in the wee hours on Monday.
He was admitted to a hospital in Kanpur after he had tested positive for COVID-19, ANI reported.
India registered a slight dip in COVID-19 cases as it registered 3,68,147 new coronavirus infections and 3,417 related deaths in the last 24 hours, informed the union health ministry on Monday morning. With this, the cumulative count of the cases has gone up to 1,99,25,604, ANI reported.

Odisha recorded 8,914 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, the state health department said on Monday.
With this, the total number of confirmed cases in Odisha has gone up to 4,71,536. Currently, there are 71,835 active cases of COVID-19 in the state, ANI reported.

Lieutenant Governor of Delhi Anil Baijal on Sunday asked concerned departments and agencies to submit an action plan with regard to the availability of hospital beds, medicines, medical oxygen as well as increasing the capacity of crematoriums and graveyards amid a surge in COVID-19 cases in the national capital, ANI reported.

One more person died from coronavirus in Ladakh as 140 fresh cases surfaced, pushing infection count in the union territory to 14,226, according to officials on Monday.
So far, 145 people have died due to the infection in the UT, comprising Leh and Kargil districts, PTI reported.
Vaccination centres, banks and essential services will remain functional during the weeklong lockdown in Haryana from Monday imposed amid a sharp surge in coronavirus cases.
Vaccination drive for the 18-44 age group began in the state on Sunday.
An official order on Sunday evening detailing the lockdown guidelines said that considering the unprecedented surge in COVID-19 cases across the state, the Haryana government has considered it necessary to take effective measures to prevent its spread in the state.
The state on Sunday recorded its biggest single-day jump with 145 deaths taking the count to 4,486 while 13,322 fresh infections pushed the infection count to 5,14,888.
Leaders of 13 Opposition parties Sunday urged the Centre to launch a free mass vaccination drive across the country in view of the unprecedented surge in COVID-19 cases.
In a joint statement, they also called upon the Centre to ensure uninterrupted oxygen supply to all hospitals and health centres as they manage the staggering patient loads in view of the rising cases.
The signatories include Congress president Sonia Gandhi, JDS leader and former prime minister HD Deve Gowda, NCP leader Sharad Pawar, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee.
“In times of the uncontrollable surge of the pandemic across our country, we call upon the Central government to focus all attention in ensuring the uninterrupted flow of Oxygen supplies to all hospitals and health centres across the country,” they said in a joint statement.
“We call upon the Central government to immediately launch a free mass vaccination programme across the country,” they added.
The opposition leaders said the budgetary allocation of Rs 35,000 crore for the vaccination programme must be utilised for this drive.
