Coronavirus India LIVE Updates: Daily Covid Cases In India Fall Below 2-Lakh Mark After Over 1 Month

The daily count of coronavirus cases in the country fell below the 2-lakh mark after over a month taking the total tally of COVID-19 cases to 2,69,48,874, while the death count rose to 3,07,231, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Tuesday.
A total of 1,96,427 new coronavirus infections were reported in a day. The country also reported the lowest death count in 21 days with 3,511 fresh fatalities, the data updated at 8 am showed.
India had registered 1,84,372 new coronavirus infections on April 14.
The active cases have further reduced to 25,86,782 comprising 9.60 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate has improved to 89.26 per cent.
The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 2,40,54,861, while the case fatality rate stands at 1.14 per cent, the data stated.
Meanwhile, the nationwide cumulative COVID-19 vaccination coverage has exceeded 19.84 crores, informed the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
The cumulative number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country stands at 19,84,43,550.

Ladakh recorded more COVID-19 recoveries on Tuesday than new infections as 184 people got discharged from hospitals after battling coronavirus, while 125 new cases were added. Officials said the latest update takes the Union Territory’s overall tally of cases to 17,532, while the number of active infections stands at 1,463 with 1,249 in Leh district and 214 in Kargil. A total of 178 people have died due to COVID-19 in the union territory so far which includes 130 in Leh, 48 in Kargil. Of the new cases reported during the past 24 hours, the officials said 92 were detected in Leh and five in Kargil.
The Karnataka government has directed health officials to administer the second dose of Covaxin COVID-19 vaccine only to people aged above 45 years. In an official order on Monday the state government said: “In order to tide over the current situation of short supply of Covaxin in the State of Karnataka, it is hereby advised that all the private health care institutions should utilize the available stock of Covaxin at their respective health facility, as the second dose for the age group 45 plus who are awaiting for the second dose of Covaxin as per the COVID-19 vaccination schedule of Government of India.”

The COVID-19 tally in Maharashtra’s Thane district has gone up to 5,10,805 with the addition of 826 new cases of the viral infection, an official said on Tuesday. These new cases were reported on Monday, he said. The virus also claimed the lives of 52 more people, raising the death toll in the district to 8,923, he said, adding that the COVID-19 mortality rate in Thane stood at 1.74 per cent. Details of recovered and under-treatment patients were not provided by the district administration.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has said that more information is required from Bharat Biotech, which is seeking emergency use listing (EUL) for its Covaxin vaccine for COVID-19. The latest status of COVID-19 Vaccines within WHO EUL/PQ evaluation process’ guidance document dated May 18 on the WHO website said Bharat Biotech submitted EOI (Expression of Interest) on April 19 and that More information required . A pre-submission meeting is expected to be planned May-June 2021, the guidance document said.

AIIMS Director Randeep Guleria said that there is no indication that children will be severely or more affected in the third wave of COVID-19. Responding to a question on the possible impact of a third wave on children, Mr Guleria said there is so far no evidence that there will be severe infection in children or there will be more cases in them in the upcoming wave of COVID-19.

US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer has refused to send Covid vaccines to Punjab directly, making it clear that they only deal with the central government. Its refusal came a day after another drug maker, Moderna, declined the state’s request. Punjab Health Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu on Monday informed that a total of 111 cases of black fungus have so far been reported from several parts of the state and an expert group has finalised the treatment protocols for the disease. According to a press release, 25 of these cases were reported from government health facilities, while the remaining 86 from various private hospitals.
Amid rising cases of black fungus in the state, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao on Monday instructed officials to enhance specific beds to treat the infection, reported news agency ANI. According to a press release issued by Chief Ministers Office (CMO), he held a high-level review meeting here on Monday at Pragathi Bhavan on curtailment of Corona, black fungus, vaccine, implementation of the lockdown. He said, “A total of 1,500 beds, at least 1,100 beds in Hyderabad and another 400 in districts, need to be set up. In addition to increasing the number of beds, the CM said the number of drugs required to reduce Black Fungus cases should be estimated and medicines ordered immediately.”
