Bengal Phase 8 Election 2021 Live: 38.8% Voter Turnout Till 11 am In Phase 8 Of Polls

Crude bombs were hurled in front of Mahajati Sadan in central Kolkata today morning while elections were underway in the area, police said.
The incident happened on Central Avenue in the heart of the city, triggering panic among the people. BJP’s Jorasanko candidate Meena Devi Purohit alleged that the crude bombs were hurled at her vehicle while she was touring different polling booths.
Polling began at 7 am today for 35 seats in the eighth phase of the assembly elections in West Bengal amid the rampaging second wave of COVID-19.
Long queues were seen outside most polling booths since early morning, raising concern over the spread of the infection even as the Election Commission said that all precautionary measures are in place.
The state registered its highest single-day spike of 17,207 COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, while 77 more people succumbed to the disease.
In this phase, 35 Assembly constituencies spread across four districts will go to the polls. Among these, six are in Malda, eleven in Birbhum, eleven in Murshidabad, and seven in Kolkata.
Over 84.77 lakh electorates, including 41.21 lakh women and 158 third gender persons, would be casting their votes at as many as 11,860 polling stations. A total of 283 candidates, including 35 women are in the fray in the last phase of the West Bengal polls.
The eight-phase elections to the 294-member assembly began on March 27. The votes will be counted on Sunday.

As many as 283 candidates, including 35 women, are in the fray in the last phase of the assembly elections where polling is being held in 35 constituencies in four districts. The 35 constituencies are spread across four districts. Among these, six are in Malda, eleven in Birbhum, eleven in Murshidabad, and seven in Kolkata. Meanwhile, voting began with a half an hour delay due to a glitch in the EVM, at polling booth number 188 in Birbhum.
In Malda’s English Bazar constituency, BJP has fielded women rights activist Sreerupa Mitra Chaudhury against TMC candidate Krishnendu Narayan Chowdhury and CPI(M)’s Koushik Mishra. In the Mothabari constituency, TMC’s sitting MLA Sabina Yeasmin has an edge over BJP’s Shyam Chand Ghosh and Congress candidate Md Dulal Sekh. There is a head-to-head contest between Congress’ Md Mottakin Alam and TMC’s Sabitri Mitra in the Manikchak constituency. Gour Chand Mandal is the BJP candidate from the seat.

The poll panel has placed Trinamool Congress’s Birbhum district president Anubrata Mondal under strict surveillance till 7 am on Friday, as the chief electoral officer received “several complaints against him”. Actor and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Mithun Chakraborty on Thursday cast his vote at a polling station in the Kashipur-Belgachia area of North Kolkata during the eighth phase of the ongoing West Bengal Assembly polls. After casting his vote, the actor-turned-politician congratulated the security personnel and said that he never voted so peacefully before.
