Assam Election Results 2021 Live Updates: Counting Of Votes Underway Amid Strict Covid Protocol
The BJP has crossed the half-way mark in early leads, ahead of its nearest rival Congress, which campaigned hard to reclaim its one-time bastion in Assam. Counting of votes for the assembly elections in the state is underway with strict adherence to health protocols as it is taking place amid a raging second wave of COVID-19. An average 82.04 per cent voter turnout was recorded in the elections to 126 assembly constituencies in Assam.
Results of Kerala, Puducherry, Tami Nadu and West Bengal assembly elections will also be declared today.
A three-tier security apparatus has also been arranged at the 331 counting halls across Assam that voted in three phases on March 27, April 1 and April 6, Election Commission officials said.
At least 15 rounds of sanitisation will be carried out at each polling centre, besides social distancing and other precautions, including a ban on gatherings, will be strictly followed, officials said.

Assam Election Results 2021: BJP crosses half-way mark in early leads
The BJP has crossed the half-way mark in early leads, ahead of its nearest rival Congress, which campaigned hard to reclaim its one-time bastion in Assam.
The counting of votes in the Assam polls has commenced and early trends have started to pour in showing Bharatiya Janata Party leading on six seats while Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) is leading on two seats.
Meanwhile, Congress and Bodoland Peoples Front are leading on one seat each.
The election schedule spread across four states and one Union Territory began on March 27 and continued till April 29.
An unused EVM was found inside a trunk at the counting centre premises here on Saturday
evening, a government release said.
On being found, District Election Officer Megh Nidhi Dahal along with Returning Officers rushed to the spot to enquire about the machine. Contesting candidates too reached the spot.
On investigation, it was found that the unused EVM which had been kept in reserve on polling day, had inadvertently found its way to the counting venue. The release said no votes had been polled on the machine.
It was opened before contesting candidates who were satisfied that there was no misuse the unused EVM was immediately taken for safe storage to an EVM warehouse adjacent to the Deputy Commissioner’s office.

In Assam, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is seeking a second term after a thumping win in the 2016 elections where the party ended Tarun Gogoi-led Congress’ 15-year rule, when it won 86 out of 126 seats.
The main contest is between the alliances led by the BJP and Congress.
The BJP-led led alliance also includes the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL).
The Congress has stitched a broad alliance called the Mahajot which includes All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), Communist Party of India, the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation, the Anchalik Gana Marcha (AGM) and the Bodoland Peoples’ Front (BPF).

As the counting of votes for the Assembly elections began in the four states- Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Union Territory of Puducherry on Sunday, Congress leader Kapil Sibal said that whoever wins such victories are pyrrhic as saving lives in this unprecedented time when the country is rattled with second wave of COVID-19 is important.

Counting of votes got underway on Sunday morning for the Assam assembly elections, with most exit polls predicting a victory for the BJP-led alliance for the second time in a row.
The electoral fate of 946 candidates including 74 women, who contested the three-phase polls for the 126-member assembly, will be decided during the exercise.
Counting started at 8 am in 331 designated halls where the Election Commission has put in place various measures to ensure strict adherence to COVID-19 protocols, as the state has witnessed a surge in cases.

The Congress on Saturday decided that it will not participate in election debates on television on Sunday when the results for assembly polls for five states are out.
Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said in view of the serious coronavirus situation in the country, the party”s spokespersons will not participate on the TV debates after poll results are out.
The results for assembly elections in states of Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala would be declared on May 2.

The Assam government on Friday extended the night curfew till May 7, following a surge in COVID-19 cases in the state.
The restrictions on movement of individuals from 8 pm to 5 am were to end on Saturday.
All shops and market places will close by 6 pm, though pharmacies, hospitals, animal care centres and veterinary clinics may operate without restrictions, being providers of essential services, according to an official order by Chief Secretary Jishnu Baruah.
Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, confident about winning the state elections with an enhanced mandate, said the people “have shown their love” by voting for the BJP and its allies.
“Once again the BJP-led alliance will come to power. People have shown their love for us by voting us and we will reciprocate the love by working for the people of the state,” the chief minister told reporters.
“I am hopeful that the people will continue to show their love and support the government at all times,” Mr Sonowal said.
Various exit polls have also predicated that BJP will retain power in the state.
Only candidates and their agents, who have received both the doses of COVID-19 vaccine or have tested negative for the infection, will be allowed to enter a counting venue on Sunday.
According to the Assam Health and Family Welfare department, approximately 35,000 counting officials, and agents of candidates, to be engaged in the process, have got themselves tested on April 30 in pre-identified and notified testing centres.
Considering the fact that coronavirus infection is raging in Assam, steps have been taken to ensure that COVID guidelines are strictly followed during the counting.
Arrangements have been made for sanitising the counting venues frequently during the process.
Wearing of face masks and use of sanitisers have been made mandatory for entering the counting halls.
EVMs and VVPATs at the well-ventilated counting venues will be sanitised before the commencement of the process.
Tables will be placed in the counting halls in such a way so that social distancing norms are maintained.
Unlike in 2016 assembly elections when there were 143 counting halls with 14 tables each, the number of tables has been reduced to seven per hall this time.
The result for the Assam Assembly election 2021, which were held in 3 phases – March 27, April 1 and April 6 – will be declared today (May 2). The counting of votes will begin at 8 am and initial leads are expected soon after. The Assam Assembly comprises of 126 seats, one for each MLA from 126 Assembly constituencies in the state. The majority mark for the Assam Assembly is 64 seats.
Assam recorded an average 82.04 per cent voter turnout in the 3-phase elections. The BJP, which is the incumbent government in the state, is in an alliance with Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL). The Congress-led ‘Mahajot’ or grand allaince of 10 parties in Assam includes Badruddin Ajmal’s party AIDUF and the Bodoland People’s Front as the main partners. The third front in Assam is the United Regional Front, which includes Lurinjyoti Gogoi’s Assam Jatiya Parishad and Akhil Gogoi’s Raijor Dal.
COVID-19 cases, the Assam government on Friday banned victory rallies across the state on May 2, when Assembly election results will be declared. The government has also extended the night curfew across the state till May 7.
The state government has released two separate notification in this regard.
“Any victory procession or assembly at any public place during and after the counting on 02.05.2021 is prohibited,” the notification released by the government said.
It has specified that winning candidate will only be accompanied by two persons while the cracking of fire crackers and usage of loud speakers has been prohibited.
The BJP, along with its alliance partners in Assam, will win 83 seats claimed its state party chief, Ranjeet Kumar Dass, on Friday, two days before the election results. The projection is far below the 100 seats the BJP claimed to win but comfortably above the majority mark of 64. The state Assembly strength is 126.
Explaining the break-up of numbers, Mr Dass said the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) will suffer reverses and will have to settle with just eight seats. The BJP will win 70 seats, he said, adding the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), another partner, will win five seats.

The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is likely to retain power in Assam, NDTV’s poll of exit polls, an aggregate of exit polls, has predicted.
The BJP is expected to win 72 of 126 seats. The Congress is likely to win 53 seats, says the poll of exit polls.
