While several communities have asked for reservation or a community development board, the latest to demand the same from the Karnataka government is the Vokkaliga community. Its members submitted a memorandum on Monday demanding an increase in reservation from 4% to 10% in the backward classes category 3A. The memorandum also sought to set up a Vokkaliga development board.

Deputy Chief Minister Ashwath Narayan and Revenue minister R Ashok, both belonging to the Vokkaliga community, received the memorandum from the community seers at the Adichunchanagiri mutt in Bengaluru.

“The community constitutes 17% of the population of Karnataka. The 3A category reservation which is 4% must be shared with 12 communities and hence the reservation must be increased to 10%,” the memorandum pointed out.

“Also, all 115 sub castes, urban and rural Vokkaligas must be considered for reservation. At present only some of the sub castes are included,” it stated.

Ashok said the demand will be discussed and Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa will take an appropriate decision.
